How to Tell if You Need Brake Repair

How to Tell if You Need Brake RepairYou may think it would be simple to tell if your vehicle requires brake repair or service, such as if it becomes harder to stop. Well sure, but that is past the point when the brakes should have been serviced. It is important to ensure your brake system is functioning 100 percent correct all the time so you can stop quickly in order to prevent devastating accidents. Be aware of these signs of brake failure and if you experience any of them make an appointment with your local auto mechanic right away to have the problem fixed!

Brakes Make Noise

Do you hear a grinding noise when you hit the brakes? What about a squeal? Neither of these are good signs of brake health. Brakes will generally make noise for two reasons. The first is because your brake pads are designed with a small mechanism that creates the squealing when the pads are getting low to warn you that they need to be repaired. The second is because your brake pads are almost or completely gone and metal is rubbing on metal, which is very unsafe. In either case make an appointment for brake repair right away.

Brake Pedal goes to the Floor

When you hit the brakes there should be some resistance from the brake pedal. If it is soft or spongy there is a good chance your brake pads are nearly gone. However it could be a more serious problem, such as a brake fluid leak or air in the brake lines.

Car Pulls to the Side

You car should continue in a straight line when you hit the brakes. If the vehicle tries to go to the left or right as you brake you may have uneven wear of the brake pads, dirty brake fluid or a stuck wheel cylinder. Each of these can greatly reduce your braking power.

Bad Vibrations

If you feel a vibration coming from the brake pedal, steering wheel or the car as a whole when you brake then you most likely have warped rotors. Rotors are what the brake pads grip in order to slow your vehicle on a disc brake system. If the rotors are warped you car's brake pads can't grip a smooth surface thus decreasing the amount of friction and lowering your ability to effectively brake.

Brake problems should not be taken lightly. If you suspect brake trouble call your mechanic right away to see if it is safe to drive your vehicle to the shop or if it should be towed.
